What many of you do not know (I suppose) is that the Hungarian brand of Pannonia used a Yamaha YDS2 to construct their first twin cylinder prototype racers, which later- on led to production bikes. My pictures come from the book: MOTOR versenyek /versenyzok, by Temesvary Gyorgy and Voros Janos
The engineers at Pannonia were very clever but were restricted enormously in their potential, caused by the then existing political climate. So they got a Yamaha YDS2, presumably from Finland (Arwidson was one of the very first Yamaha Importers in Europe!)

Now look at all the machine details carefully
The 1968 Bol d'Or machine had the Yamaha frame, wheels, brakes, front fork, complete exhaust system and also the Yamaha cylinders, cylinderheads and the Mikuni carburetors. The rear shockabsorbers were Girlings I think. So now you finally see the proof, Yamaha was already superior then!

The Pannonia guys must have purchased one more bike (or they changed the parts when required) as the "Racer" of 1968 also has the YDS2 front fork/front wheel and rear wheel/rear arm. The engine is their own twin rotary valve motor!

In 1971 the Pannonia Bol d'Or machine was more their own bike. But when you look carefully you can see that the engineers still were using the Yamaha kickstarter, Mikuni carburetors and Yamaha airfilters!

All in all it only proves the fantastic determination of the East European engineers in making (and loving) motorcycles against all the odds of those difficult times....! Here are 3 Hungarian websites with additional information: (Oldtimer catalogue see page 12)
