My collection started with this YDS3, framenr. Y23-29731. It is a 1966 model and I had it registered in 1980. So I am playing around with two-strokes already more than 25 years!
At that time I did not know anything about the Yamaha 2-stroke history but as I started searching for parts, the curiosity grew. Please realise that at that time many dealers and importers still had parts for these bikes, gathering dust on their shelves. So I went "Dutch" and gathered many parts from friendly Yamaha dealers all over Europe for my first bikes. Oh, if I had known then what I know now! But that counts for many more people I think. Most parts came from the UK as the early Yamaha's, especially the 250 cc models, sold in large numbers because of the then existing "L " licence. (Learner licence for 17 year old youngsters). The YDS3 is still as I restored it in 1979/1980, only the paintwork has been redone once. Now it actually needs only new spokes and a re-polishing of the aluminium parts to bring it back in showroom condition.
The left hand bulge on the crankcase indicates the crankshaft mounted clutch on this model. The Autolubepump is behind the clutch on the gearboxshaft. But when you were standing for a trafficlight with first gear engaged and the clutch pulled-in, the engine did not get oil as the Autolubepump was not rotating............!

This picture shows the position of the carburettors and the manifolds to the airfilter. And do you see the very rare original airpump underneath?

The front wheel has that nice twin leading shoe front brake that was the top of things in the 1960's. We were quickly satisfied then!

A combined speedometer/tachometer was used by all 4 Japanese brands but the Yamaha one was very nice.

An extra small cast bracket was fitted between the l.h. lever bracket and the rubber grip for a very small light/horn/indicator switch. This one was on the bike when I got it 30 years ago.

On the right hand side also the throttle grip was different from the later ones, these early ones were completely in diecast aluminium.

The Autolube oiltank had a polished aluminium cap. This was soon changed for a plastic cap.

The artistic linkage between the footbrake and the rearwheel quickly got some play. It was necessary to adjust it often. The stoplightswitch with a nice rubber cover fits snugly inbetween. Typical japanese details.

Lots of chrome in those days. Yamaha supplied also black sprockets as originals, I have old (new) ones already for the YDS2!

The rearlight was fitted to an one-piece chrome-plated bracket, quite simple but difficult to find nowadays.

From the rear you can identify these small taillights easily.
