This machine was a luxury version of the YD2, with a nice large fueltank (with for the first time the tuning fork logo!), larger hubs and an engine which developed 1 HP more!
Framenr. 63Y1323773 comes from the UK and must have been one of the first on the streets in Britain.
The YD3 sports as first Yamaha the nice, large front brake, although it is a single cam unit.

The rear hub is equally large and looks as if it can do the job properly.

The metal two-piece chaincase is fitted with just a few screws and has a ruber inspection hole for the chain tension.

The fueltank is nicely chromed, has knee grips and carries the Yamaha tuning forks. This tank was re-chromed 3 times and the inside was "sealed" as the metal was a little porous.

Sidecovers are simple metal pressings for the YD3. The earlier YD2 had both metal en plastic covers.

On the left the YD3 has a nice integral unit with choke lever and switches.

On the right the starting button is included in the unit.

The Yazaki speedometer has the usual warning lights.

The simple AMAL type carburetor is connected to the cylinders with an "Y" shaped rubber maniforld. The airfilter is a wire-mesh type. (Covers are taken off)

Yamaha's gearchange lever on this model is a convenient heel-toe affair. You can nearly wear slippers.....

For riding I use 1 battery only. Normally 2 6 Volt batteries are used, serial mounted to give the required 12 Volts.

The regulator and the starter solenoid switch are fitted on the frame behind one of the covers. I do not have the original toolset however........!

Tailight on the YD3 is of a different type, I have never found a new one. The chrome rim is okay, but the lens was cracked once.
