Yamaha TD2 Special by Leo Commu

Leo Commu was a gifted Dutch rider in the late 1960's. Unfortunately his career ended with a tragic accident that cost his life in 1972.

Being a carpenter from profession he also mastered the art of motorcycle building very well. His Yamaha TD2 "special" had many novel features. This machine was built with some help of his friend Martin Mijwaart, better known as one of the Jamathi 50 cc GP men. With this bike Leo won its very first International race in Heeswijk (NL) in 1971.

The TD2 excelled in being rather short and very businesslike.

Leo made the machine along the "featherbed" lines but increased the wheelbase for more top speed stability.

Commu used already Krober ignition on his Yamaha. It must have been one of the earliest specimen of that german brand.

The rev-counter was Krober too as you can see. Leo also made a copy of the Yamaha "twin-pull" throttle cable box.

The very strong and stiff frame Leo Commu built for his Yamaha TD2 engine.

A very neat rear wheel adjustment system was employed.

The Yamaha TD2 engine from the clutch side. If you did not know you would say that it was a Yamaha DS6....... Remarkable that Yamaha could "screw" so much performance from these simple twins!
