The Yamaha Omaha trail bike MJ2C-(K) was purely made for the US market in 1962. Actually it was just a modified MJ2 machine. The leg shields were taken off, a small motocross type front fender was fitted, knobby tires were used and in order to make the machine really tractable in “rough” terrain an extra very large rear sprocket was fitted!
By moving the chain onto the normal rear sprocket and removing some links you were ready for the street. This must have been quite a messy job! The engine received a real sump guard and the air filter was mounted high up the frame.
Not many were sold and this find must rate as being quite unique! Travis Clements found this machine with frame number M3-804879 at an auction and after some fiddling it runs really well.
It has (as the MF1/MF2) 12 V electrics and dynastart/kickstart system and rather small 16” wheels, (old dimension 20#) Much later, in 1967, Honda had a similar model, the CT90, a trail version of the Cub 90. So here it was not Yamaha that copied Honda, but very much the other way!
Cycle World magazine tested it in March 1963 and described it as: Though not a powerhouse in performance, it will get the rider almost anywhere, and when all else fails, it’s easy to push……! Price then was a remarkable $ 275.00. Those were the days! The pictures Travis Clements took from the machine show clearly in what an excellent condition it is. It really just needs proper cleaning-up! |
