Ludy Beumer's motorcycles

Several guys asked me how I started motorcycling! Now, that is a long story, but here are a few of my bikes.

The first machine I purchased for the pricely sum of Dfl 200,-- (less than Euro 90), was this now extremely rare ARIEL Square Four 600 cc OHC machine. With 2 friends we drove in a Volkswagen Van to Amsterdam to load it up from a shop somewhere. That was in 1962. It was a non-runner and to cut a long story short, it is now (in 2008) in the possession of the President of the Dutch ARIEL club !

My first new bike was this humble Moto Guzzi Zigolo 110 cc, which I purchased in May 1963. It was a lovely little machine but had to go after a year as the lust for speed was to great...... This picture is taken after I had picked it up from the local shop, it did not even have a registration plate! (UU-19-77) It surely does not exist anymore and went, where all good bikes go, to the Holy Scrapfields.......!

Just before I joined Yamaha Motor N.V. in October 1971 I had purchased a brand new Yamaha XS1F, the famous candy orange one. It vibrated even more than the British machines I had owned, but it stayed together and with some Dutch KONI shockabsorbers kept me safely on the road for 53.000 km in 2 years. My brother joined me for a short vacation in Switzerland, where he made this picture.
