The YR1 introduced in Feb. '67 was Yamaha's first full 350 cc machine. Yamaha put all their engineering into this machine and although it was a little heavy, it proved to be very good. The YR1 served later as basis for the TR productionracers and the engine design with horizontal split crankcases was adopted for all twin cylinder bikes in the future. The brochure is a typical US one. Look at the guy with his white pants! (And they did not have o-ring chains then!)

Peter Abelmann from Germany had this interesting design sketch of the final YR1. Everyone agrees that it has a real motorcycle line. (following 2 pictures can be clicked for a large one!) And according to many Yamaha fans, the black version was wayout the nicest. Ever seen this? Genuine (I think) Yamaha side bags and a touring screen on a YR1? These guys look so happy. Today it seems you need at least to have a Yamaha FJR1300 with all the goodies to go travelling. Somewhere we lost perspective....!

In true Yamaha fashion, the YR1 was followed by the YR2, production start in March 1968. The YR2 was practically identical with the YR1, the fuel tank with chrome covers was replaced by a one-piece fueltank with painted sides. Here is the YR2 in its US version. (My friend Peter Abelmann dived into his files and came up immediately with the missing YR2 pictures, Cheers Peter-San!)
Yamaha YR2 US
Especially on the backside of the brochure you can see that it was very similar to the YR1

The European version was not very different, cheap to produce in those days!

The YR2C with the upswept pipes looked very nice ideed. I have never seen one on these shores.....!
Yamaha YR2C
It is very unfortunately that things have changed so much over the years........! I have checked "REYNOLDS CYCLE CENTER", of course the Dealer does not exist anymore, it is now a "Minute Man Pizza" outlet. What a terrible shame!!!!
Yamaha YR2C
Yamaha counted well, so after the YR2 the YR3 appeared in January 1969, last of the "old school" of 1960's Yamaha engines. I have 3 brochures and the printing date gives this one as an early brochure. It was much more sporty, with separate speedo/tachometers, DS6 style exhaust, etc.
Yamaha R3-1968
By mid-1969 this brochure was made and issued.

And I believe this was the last one for the 1969 Summer season.
Yamaha R3-1969
The backside of all these brochures was identical. it is a pity that so few of these bikes survived. They were very quick and quite reliable. You can see clearly that the R3 had a polished engine, while the previous models still had painted engine covers.

The R3C looked very also very nice with the high-up pipes and its attractive colours.

Against my belief the R3C was also sold in Japan. Peter had this 1969 Japanese brochure and that proves it very well. Must have been quite a bike to kickstart for them!
