After the succesful Yamaha YL1 Yamaha wanted to replace this model with a more cost-efficient but equally quick, single cylinder model, it was called the Yamaha YL2. The Yamaha YL2 took many design and construction ideas from the other smaller machines. Frame, frontfork, rear swinging arm, headlamp and other parts are very similar to other bikes as you can see. The first 1968 model has painted mudguards and looks like the first YL1 models.
But the engine is of course rotary valve
Already in November 1968 Yamaha introduced a mild off-road version of the YL2, named L5T.
A "T" handlebar, sumpguard and Yamaha's "Trailmatic" Transmission were new features. The trailmatic was a 3 speed gearbox with high or low gearing. With the knob on the transmission cover (left small picture) you could engage high or low gearing!
The 1969 YL2 had already some more chrome. The mudguards were chromed, there was a chrome strip around the seat.
For the rest is remained technically the same.
The 1969 L5T was called L2CA and had a longer front fork with larger wheels (18 inch) and the fueltank size was increased from 6.8 lit > 8.2 lit.
The specification sheet on the backside of the brochure shows the differences clearly. |
