The Yamaha YG1 80 ccm rotary valve was one of the first machines that found worldwide recognition and fame. It was sold in very large numbers, the first ones did not have the famous Autolube system. You can read on the technical specifications that a 20 : 1 mix was advised. The YG1 was introduced in 1963 and featured a ball-lock gearchange system. Oh! And its price was only $ 340,00 POE Los Angeles when introduced mid 1963 !! It was also available in of of the very first "Trail" versions, that hit the market (only in the USA). So YAMAHA was indeed very early with the "off-road" segment, as officially it started with the DT1 250 cc in 1968. And this is 1963......! The European model differed not much, this is the machine that was sold in the Netherlands, but in very small numbers. On the brochure is written by hand "1964" and that is correct, as AUTOLUBE became available during the Summer of 2004. Here you can study the technical specification of the machine.I had one of these machines some years ago. It is featured on the two-strokes page and you can click here to see it. (go to "previous" after you have seen it, otherwise the program throws you out of the system!) In 1968 two versions were marketed by Yamaha in the USA, the street G5S and the "off-road" YG5T. There was not much difference but the "T" looked very much as a baby Yamaha XT500 from a decade later.....! It is nice to look at these "period" pictures. You remember surely that we all were wearing the same type of clothing, slacks, sweaters, suede shoes, etc.
Yamaha G5-S, 1968
Both models had the fashionable "up" exhaust sytem, looked pretty quick!
Yamaha G5-S, 1968
The "trail" model had knobby tyres, a solo seat, strong luggage carrier and a final drive ratio short enough to climb Mount McKinley! Actually it had 2 rear sprockets, so you could choose a high or low ratio.
Yamaha YG5-T, 1968
I would love to have one of these mini "Dakar" machines!
