| Yamaha XS1 in the Press |

These pictures come from Fried Anepool, the founder of the Dutch "Yamaha 650 Twin Club Nederland" (now in its 20th year already!) Fried remarked quite correctly, that although the Yamaha YDS Club in Japan celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the YDS1, the 40th Anniversary of the XS1 was actually commercially far more important as still thousands of XS650 machines are used every day (and who has ever seen a Yamaha YDS1?). But that is a good discussion with friends and some alcohol.....!
The introduction of the Yamaha XS1 (the candy green one) took place at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1969. From this first machine 6.586 units were built. The serial numbers ran from S650-000101 > s650-006686.
The May 1970 issue of "Yamaha News" showed the new bike which was obviously Yamaha's pride in some nice sceneric pictures.
A funny picture today! The Yamaha XS1 as a pure touring bike, fully dressed and with a flag mounted on the front fork. Maybe an early police bike? No, it is not. I just found "Yamaha Time" magazine, nr 2 from 1970, where we can read: Mr. Fusanori Miyaguchi, a news messenger for the Mainichi Press Company, is playing an important role daily as a carrier of accounting manuscripts, displaying the excellent maneuvrability through extremely congested traffic in the mammoth city. Mr. Miyaguchi, aged 18 and born in the southern extremity of Japan is a great Yamaha fan and did not hesitate to purchase the brand-new 650 cc Yamaha as soon as it appeared in the market in February (1970). He is proud of his duty and finds his life much more enriched thanks to his Yamaha.
The July 1970 "Yamaha News" issue continued to give the readers many pictures of touring Yamaha XS1 bikes. At that time there was certanly no "racing" in the publicity...! Valentino Rossi was not born of course and not even planned for!
The Nov 1970 "Yamaha News" issue shows already the Yamaha XS1B or F as it is known. The Yamaha XS1B/F was the 1971 model and produced in much larger numbers. Starting with number s650-007101, the model ran to frame s650-25383, thus 18.283 units were produced.
