As many of you (especially the Dutch fans!) do know, I was quite involved in the marketing of the famous FS1 moped in the early seventies in Europe. Several models were considered for the European Market before finally the FS1 was chosen. It looked very sporty and was, also thanks to the rotary valve engine, quite fast. It was just s smaller "big" Yamaha!! It had all the Yamaha features, like the dust and water resistent brakes, "Autolube" in jection, good ligths with flashers and a proper battery, all items which you did not find on European models. Here is the brochure (in German) of the original 1970 model, In some countries in Europe there existed a Motorcycle 50 cc class with a special licence for 16 year olds. In Germany this was the "Kleinkraftrad" with unlimited speed, perfect for the FS1!

The largest volumes were sold in the Netherlands at that time, but there was no special brochure for the pedal-equipped machine. So we (Yamaha Motor N.V.) requested the factory to come up with European style advertising material for all countries. This was the very first mock-up for the 1972 leaflet for the Netherlands.
We did not like it (anyway I did not like it!) and persuaded my Boss to rather make it myself together with an advertising guy. This is the result of the first European Yamaha FS1P brochure: Many small errors were, like on the cover we have the machine already with some optional accessories, which were made by the Dutch Yamaha Distributor "Het Motorpaleis" (the Motorpalace). They made big profit on these items, therefore...!

The photographer put a Yamaha sticker on the fuel tank because he liked it. I was very angry, but the pictures were already at the printer!

Here you see the cleverly designed pedal construction (in the Netherlands at that time it was a law that mopeds could be propelled by a pedalling system, weird but true). Unfortunately it was forgotten to patent the system so the others (H+S) copied it later (but they never sold our quantities!).

Here is aghost view of the engine. Now you make that with a computer, easily, cut/paste. In my time I cut everything from Spare parts books, glued all pieces on white paper and the photographer took some pictures of it! But it was fun!

For the 1972 year I also "designed" the FS1DX (deluxe model). The FS1 was purchased mainly by young 16-17 year old boys and we wanted to target also the older generation who purchased mainly Zundapp KS50 and Kreidler Florett mopeds. They looked and were somewhat heavier (and sturdier) so the image of the FS1 had to change. I looked around in the workshop and started puzzling. At that time many Yamaha's had similar parts. So the FS1P was equipped with the fuel tank, seat and chaincase of another bike and hey presto: the FS1DX was born !! And I still do not know why, but the bike still goes through life as the "Ludy Beumer Special"....! Some people are remembered by beautiful music, hopefully I will be remembered by a stinking two-stroke moped !!!

Here are the simply made chrome tubing accessories for the 2 models. As said, very cheap to produce, excellent profit!

For 1973 we decided to make a kind of Pop-Art brochure with more general information about Yamaha and even a Workshop Calender in it!

The pictures were now in colour (budget was more!) so I could make a nice brochure for the boys and their fathers.

This time no stickers were put on the mopeds but we forgot to take a bucket with water and a sponge to the terrain, so they all have dirty wheels!
